A Change of Seasons for TenkaraGrasshopper

There is a shift in the weather that takes place a couple of times a year that gets me excited about the prospects of a new season top come.

Anglers always have a great time when the weather warms up and short sleeve season starts, or even better, when the water temperature and the air temperature are nice enough that we can wet wade. Spring and summer bring an awakening of the world outside the door, as animals come out of hibernation and bugs start hatching in ever increasing numbers on the rivers and still waters that anglers haunt.

When insects get the signal that it is time to stop being immature life forms and their hormones start flowing, telling them it is time for them to engage in an aerial act of procreation to assure the survival of their species, anglers get excited, as do the fish who prey on emerging insects. Anglers around the world use whatever time is available to them to sell an artificial example of a real insect to a fish looking for a meal. Each and every time that the anglers offering triggers a fish to eat, the angler smiles and knows deep down in his heart that all is good.

The days pass with the angler chasing fish and when not chasing fish, he or she is dreaming of chasing fish. Yet, as we all know, time stops for no man or woman. With the movement of time, subtle changes take place which signal a shift in the continuum of the seasons. It could be anything from days shortening as the earth rotates on it's axis, possibly the air temperature drops when the sun goes down, or it could be nothing more than a feeling that Mother Nature is following her calendar, your calendar be damned!

One day, the proverbial shoe drops, and anglers find their world coated in a blanket of white. The snow might resemble a layer of dust or something closer to a concrete foundation. With the coming of snow, many anglers, myself included, experience an internal shift away from chasing fish and make it a mission to prepare for the season to come. Most fly anglers will spend time cataloging their stock of flies that has been depleted over the spring/summer season. Once the cataloging is finished they will make the decision to spend time at their fly tying station to refill their fly box or boxes as the case may be.

For those of us here at TenkaraGrasshopper Media Services, LLC the TenkaraGrasshopper Battlestation will become a familiar place to be over the next few months. We will be not only filing our personal fly boxes but we will also be filling a number of guide trip boxes so that we can provide a number of tenkara kebari patterns for our clients to use while fishing, whether that is with a tenkara rod or even a western rod and reel rig.

We will be tying kebari patterns to fill the necessary boxes for our personal trips when the weather turns around. We have also decided that we will offer a new project to our readers by reading and tying all 52 patterns from the new book Simple Flies: 52 Easy-to-Tie Patterns that Catch Fish, written by a fellow tenkara angler, Mr. Morgan Lyle. A review will follow our completion of reading this book and tying the patterns included in this wonderful little tome. This book will also have a link that can be followed if you wish to purchase a copy by following the link in My Fly Fishing Library here on TenkaraGrasshopper.com.

I also find that the winter is a great time to catch up on some reading that will help me to become a better guide so that I can offer my clients a great experience while on the water. Sometimes, the problem can be choosing what I want to read or learn more about.

Modern Midges; Talleur's Basic Fly Tying; Fly Fishing; Learning From The Water; Dynamic Nymphing; Tying and Fishing Tailwater Flies; Fly Fishing Tailwaters; Charlie's Fly Box; Charlie Craven's Basic Fly Tying; Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fishing; Orvis Guide to Prospecting for Trout; Flycasting Fundamentals; Essential Trout Flies; How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life;

Other times, I have a selection of books that I plan on reading and mining for the perfect golden nuggets that I can use to improve my own tenkara fishing along with that of my clients. Most of my selections I have read at least once and am now rereading in more detail as I search for the golden key that will help me to improve as I strive to become a better tenkara fly fishing guide. I am now in the process of mining the first book in a wonderful series written by Jason Randall, Moving Water, published in 2012 by Headwater Books.
