|Olive The Woolly Bugger By Kirk Werner|
I have been reading and re-reading a wonderful kids book about fly fishing, Olive The Little Woolly Bugger by Kirk Werner. As adult anglers we have more than a few books to choose from to read and learn from. But sadly, at least until now, children from the ages of 8 to 10 years old have not had that opportunity presented to them.
Luckily, Kirk Werner has taken a fly pattern that many of us have used or at least tied in the past and personified it to teach children about fly fishing. But, this is book is not just about fly fishing, it also renders real life experiences that young people will have in their lives socially as well as personally.
Olive attends Camp Tightloops, which is camp for young flies to learn how to fish and be good fly fishing flies. Through a few trials and tribulations Olive discovers some things about herself that make her into a confident Woolly Bugger. She also faces a number of challenges that might break her but she does not give in and perseveres.
And in the final culmination of Olive's experiences she becomes a member of the Fly Box. Interestingly, I think I look at some of the flies in my box in much the same way that Olive is chosen to join the Fly Box.
That being said, if you are an angler who wants to introduce a child to fly fishing and create a passion for it in them, than this is the book to choose to start them down that path. With all of the colorful pictures and readable text this is a book that even an adult reading this to a child will get great enjoyment out of.
|Olive and The Big Stream by Kirk Werner|
After meeting Olive the Little Woolly Bugger in the first book and Olive has graduated to The Fly Box she goes on the greatest adventure of all, the first trip to the Big Stream for the first day of the season. With a super high sense of excitement Olive and her friends from Camp Tightloops get the chance to prove themselves on the Big Stream.
Again, there are many cool details entwined into the narrative of the book about fly fishing. Even as an adult, there were some fun little things that I had never considered before. And, these will be great lessons for kids to learn as well.
Olive has many fun adventures in this volume and ultimately takes what she learned at Camp Tightloops and earns her place in The Fly Box.
With the same colorful images and colorful characters we met in the first book, both the reader and if there is someone being read to, the same enjoyment that occurred during the reading of the first book will continue again.
If you are curious to see if you can get a child to get into fly fishing with you this is the ultimate way in my opinion to at least get the interest going. As we all know, the real passion comes from the first tug. "The tug is the drug!"
You can purchase both books from Amazon by following the link below or by going over to My Library
and clicking on the images of the books there as well. And as a side note, I will be adding a new page to TenkaraGrasshopper that will follow Olive on her adventures Tenkara fishing. Keep an eye out for that in the very near future.
